Calif. pursuing gun control agenda more forcefully than any other state

Gun control advocates’ recent victory over the issue of carrying firearms in public in California highlighted the state’s increasing importance as a center of legal battles over gun rights.

In a 7-4 ruling on Thursday, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals declared that California counties have the right to restrict permits for carrying concealed guns in public.

The new ruling effectively overturned a previous court ruling that had forced some counties of the Golden State to relax their gun rules.

Commenting on the ruling, UCLA law professor Adam Winkler said, “It should not be minimized how big a victory this was for gun control advocates. Not only does it affirm the constitutionality of restrictive conceal-carry laws in California’s major cities, it also makes it less likely the Supreme Court will step in.”

The court pronounced its ruling at a time when state lawmakers are considering a series of gun bills and as state voters are preparing to consider a probable ballot measure on gun control in November.

Experts believe that California has really been pursuing an aggrieve gun control agenda more forcefully than any other state in the nation.
